Abstract
This study is to investigate the differences in oral stereognosis based on general characteristics of stroke patients and correlation between oral stereognosis and cognitive function. The sample of this study includes eighty four stroke patients. The Oral Stereognostic Test (OST) was measured with 20 differently shaped test pieces placed in the mouth. To determine oral stereognostic ability, OST was measured and responder time (RT) was confirmed during OST. MMSE was used to identify the cognitive function. Measurements were performed by occupational therapists with at least three years of clinical experience. There were no adverse events such as aspiration after the experiment. There were no differences in OST, RT, and MMSE according to the stroke patients¡¯ sex, hemiplegia side, and stroke type (p>.05). There was a significant difference in MMSE according to lesion site; patients with Supratentorial stroke showed significantly lower scores on MMSE than patients with Infratentorial strokes (p<.05). OST and MMSE showed a significant correlation (p<.05). These findings demonstrate that clinical practice should consider training because oral stereognosis correlates with cognitive function. It may also be useful as a neuroanatomical basis for oral stereognosis in stroke patients.
